2023 Layoff Tracker: Latest Meta Cuts Could Hit 4,000​

Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta began laying off thousands of employees Wednesday, nearly a month after CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the social media giant’s latest round of layoffs, as high inflation and economic instability continue to push major U.S. companies to reduce their head counts, including large-scale layoffs this week at Opendoor, Ernst & Young and David’s Bridal.

My point was those companies have been living so far removed from traditional market forces that they have become very heavy and unproductive. Meta even said we hired people to do nothing so they would not compete with us.

Having lived a life in the auto industry and town.....it is standard operating here. Layoffs and plant closings. And in numbers much greater than those. So there is a little hmmmm in there.
 
Problem is that every axe swinging exercise, ends up cutting frontline staff, because the useless types only job is protecting themselves from being cut. meanwhile the Frontliners are to busy working to see the axe.
At one point last year there were more people doing dashboard summary reports than supporting fire protection and damage control systems for the RCN. I don't know if pointing that out helped get the billets filled, but the amount of 'policy and process' people seems to grow while actual technical support is stagnant. What's funny is they generally ignore our input when looking at processes changes, despite not actually using the processes the are looking at changing.

Its a similar thing with revolutions - at least in the 20th century. Lenin was a product of a high middle class home in Russia as were many of the terrorist types in the 70s. The "proletariat" are too busy making a living to revolt.

People with university degrees need jobs. Other people with university degrees help out, because one day their children with university degrees might need someone to create a position for them.

A supply (say, of excess university graduates need white-collar information-massaging employment) creates its own demand. (Say's Law.) A supply of grievance-studies graduates likewise creates its own demand, so various institutions end up on-boarding a hockey sock of new administrative positions for grievance advocates.

I think the thing people don't realize is the effects of rate hikes take months to actually be felt in the economy.

There are some key economic indicators though:

One of them is rail traffic, particularly Intermodal Shipping. I'll let you know, it's not pretty and is going to get worse.

I think people have become pretty much addicted to 9-1-1 in our town.

Thanks to an ever increasing Call Volume, I doubt there will ever be a lay-off.
 
Well fortunately my current employment always sees lots of return guests. I think its the accomadations and meals we serve. With bail laws changing our clients may have their stays increased....
But what is staffing like? Is recruitment and retention an issue in your field?
